Witte Huis (White House). Rotterdam, Netherlands
The White House (Witte Huis) is a historic gem built in 1898 right in the heart of Rotterdam. This Art Nouveau beauty stands 43 meters tall and was Europe’s first high-rise building. Designed by the talented architect Willem Molenbroek, it’s now a National Heritage Site.
⠀
When it was built, people doubted the soft soil of Rotterdam could support such a tall structure. But with 1000 piles driven into the ground, the White House stood strong. Made from iron, steel, and concrete, it avoided using wood to reduce fire risks, making it a pioneering construction of its time.
⠀
Incredibly, the White House was one of the few buildings to survive the bombings of World War II, making it a true symbol of resilience.

To experience its charm, visit the Old Harbour for the best views or enjoy a drink at one of the cozy cafés nearby.
