Verviers, Belgium
Verviers is a charming town in eastern Belgium, located in the province of Liège. It was first mentioned in the 12th century.
In the 19th century, the town became one of the major industrial centers of Wallonia. Wool and textile factories operated here, and with the use of local clay and water from numerous springs, the town earned the nickname “the water capital of Wallonia.”
Today, Verviers combines its industrial past with a rich cultural heritage. The town preserves old houses from the 18th–19th centuries, several half-timbered buildings from the 17th century, as well as churches and buildings in various architectural styles.
Verviers is also known for its musical traditions. It is the birthplace of the outstanding violinist Henri Vieuxtemps, in whose honor an international competition has been held since 1923.
