Nieuwe Delftse Poort, Rotterdam, Netherlands
Just steps from Rotterdam Central Station stands the Nieuwe Delftse Poort. It’s not a traditional city gate, but a striking steel skeleton that captures both memory and movement. Artist Cor Kraat unveiled this 18-meter-high orange structure in 1995 to honor a lost landmark and celebrate 50 years of post-war rebuilding.
Originally designed in 1764, the old Delftsche Poort was one of Rotterdam’s most iconic buildings until it was destroyed during the bombing of 1940. Kraat reimagined it not as a replica, but as an open, airy tribute made of modern steel beams and historic fragments salvaged from the ruins.
With its bold form and transparent structure, the Nieuwe Delftse Poort invites reflection and imagination. It’s a reminder of Rotterdam’s resilience, a city that remembers its past while always building forward.
