Kemmel Command Bunker. Heuvelland, Belgium
The Kemmel Command Bunker is one of the most fascinating and best-preserved hidden sites of the Cold War. Built between 1951 and 1953, this massive underground fortress is located 20 metres deep inside the flank of strategic Mount Kemmel. A visit to this authentic top-secret site offers a unique immersive journey back to the Cold War era, when Europe was divided by growing tensions between East and West.
The bunker holds a remarkable place in Europe’s military history. Originally designed as a Belgian air defence command post within the emerging NATO defence structure, pre-NATO Western Union Defence Organisation (Benelux, France and the UK), its role evolved as NATO took over responsibility for the defence of Western Europe. From the mid-1960s onwards, the Belgian Armed Forces transformed the bunker into the nerve centre of the Supreme Command. In the event of a major crisis or an attack by the Soviet Union and its allies, the General Staff would have coordinated Belgium’s military response and fulfilled its NATO responsibilities from this very location.
The extensive visitor trail introduces you to the demanding reality of life inside a Cold War command centre. The bunker is cleverly organised over two separate levels: one dedicated to strategic command operations, and another focused on essential communication networks. As you walk through the original corridors, you will discover perfectly preserved technical installations, authentic equipment, radio systems and operational facilities that remain almost unchanged since the site was decommissioned.
Through its impressive displays and unique historical atmosphere, the museum offers a powerful insight into decades of international tension and provides visitors with a better understanding of the origins and lasting impact of the Cold War.
