Frietmuseum Brussels opened its doors in April 2025. It is a unique cultural spot dedicated to the culinary art, secret techniques, and history of Belgian fries and the potato. You can find it on Rue de l’Étuve right in the heart of the capital, perfectly opposite its sister jewel of Belgian gastronomy, the Choco-Story chocolate museum.

This interactive space spans across three floors and covers 900 m². It offers a fun and deeply educational journey through the precise craftsmanship and culture of Belgium’s most iconic dish. The audio-guided tour is available in 11 languages. It begins in Peru, the birthplace of the potato with over 4,000 varieties, and then takes you straight to “Frietland.” Inside, you will discover a fascinating treasure trove of 1,645 exhibited objects, including pre-Columbian huacas and historical fryers that demonstrate how cooking methods and temperatures have evolved over generations.

The experience is highly engaging for all ages and places the science of fry-making at its center. The museum features educational films, touch screens, 11 interactive games, and various Instagram-friendly selfie spots. Visitors can easily unlock the ultimate secrets of perfect Belgian fries. You will learn about the preferred Bintje potato, the standard 10 to 13 mm sticks, and the traditional double-cooking method in beef fat (first at 140°C, then at 170°C). The exhibition even reveals that long before mayonnaise, the original pairing was onion sauce!

Founder Eddy Van Belle first came up with this creative concept back in 2007, and the tour concludes in style. After mastering the theory behind the ultimate fry, all visitors enjoy a free tasting of a perfectly golden, crispy cone of fries inside a beautiful reconstruction of a typical Brussels park—allowing you to appreciate the expert technique firsthand.
