The National Memorial of Fort Breendonk is one of the best-preserved testimonials of Nazi atrocities in Europe. Located adjacent to the highway between Brussels and Antwerp, this armoured concrete fortress stands as a powerful reminder of the horrors of the Second World War. A visit to this former prison camp offers a deeply moving experience that you will never forget.

Built in the early 20th century as part of Antwerp’s defensive belt, the fort saw heavy action during the First World War. However, it gained its gruesome reputation during World War II when the SS turned the abandoned fortress into an “Auffanglager” (reception and transit camp) for political opponents, resistance fighters, and Jews. In 1947, the site was officially declared a National Memorial to preserve the memory of those who suffered and sacrificed their lives.

The extensive visitor trail introduces you to the daily reality of the camp through a well-structured chronological tour. The exhibition guides you through the authentic spaces where historical events took place. You will walk through the grim entrance tunnel, the dark isolation cells, the original wooden barracks, the courtyard, the torture chamber, and the execution ground.

Throughout the tour, the museum uses a rich collection of personal belongings, official historical documents, moving photographs, and original film footage. These elements bring you face-to-face with the personal stories of the prisoners and the reality of their guards, showcasing a dark page of history that must never be forgotten.

Individual visitors receive an audio guide with around 2 hours of detailed testimonies available in multiple languages. You should allow approximately 2.5 to 3 hours for a complete, respectful visit.
