Église Saint-Donat. Arlon, Belgium

The Église Saint-Donat is a striking blend of history and spirituality, perched atop the Knippchen hill in the heart of Arlon. It was originally built in 1626 by the Capuchin monks on the ruins of a medieval castle. The church has witnessed centuries of transformation, from a fortified citadel under Louis XIV to a beloved parish church.

Dedicated to Saint Donat, the protector against lightning, the church owes its patronage to its location on an iron-rich hilltop frequently struck by storms. Its Belvédère, added in the early 20th century, stands at 35 meters, offering breathtaking views over the city, the Ardennes plateau, and even into Belgium’s neighboring countries—France and Luxembourg.

Visitors can reach the church via the Montée Royale, a historic stone pathway dating back to 1846, classified as part of Wallonia’s major heritage. Walking through its charming archways and shaded paths, one can enjoy a peaceful escape with panoramic vistas.
