Église du Sacré-Cœur et Notre-Dame de Lourdes, Liège, Belgium

Standing tall on the heights of Liège in the Cointe district, the Église du Sacré-Cœur et Notre-Dame de Lourdes is a striking piece of architecture. Though often mistaken for a basilica, this church is actually part of the Mémorial Interallié, honoring the Allied forces of World War I.

Designed by architect Joseph Smolderen, the church was built between 1928 and 1936. Despite its impressive appearance, it was never fully completed. Today, its bold mix of brick, concrete, and blue stone is a testament to early 20th-century modernism.

Inside, the church holds statues of Saint Maur and Saint Mort, adding to its unique charm. Though deconsecrated in 2010 and listed as a heritage site in 2011, the church remains in limbo, waiting for restoration.

Visible from afar thanks to its green copper dome, this church continues to intrigue visitors. Nearby, you can also explore the Inter-Allied Memorial, a 19th-century observatory, and the picturesque Pont des Anges.
