Collegiate Church of Our Lady of Dinant, Belgium

The Collegiate Church of Our Lady in Dinant (Collégiale Notre-Dame de Dinant) is a stunning Gothic landmark, set along the banks of the Meuse River. It was built in the 13th century and replaced an earlier Romanesque church that collapsed after a rockfall in 1227. Its unique pear-shaped bell tower is one of the most recognizable features of Dinant’s skyline.

The church was built using local limestone and showcases the Gothic Mosan style. Inside, it has three naves, tall arches, and columns that give the space a sense of elegance and calm. The building site is small due to the rocky cliff behind it, but the design creates an impression of openness and majesty. The stained glass windows, including one of the largest in Europe, fill the interior with beautiful colors.

Over the centuries, the church has faced many challenges. Invasions and fires damaged it, but each time it was restored. The iconic bulbous bell tower, added in the 16th century, makes the church stand out. Inside, there are many fascinating details. The 11th-century baptismal fonts and paintings by famous Belgian artists, like Antoine Wiertz, add to the church’s charm. These treasures and its long history make the church an important cultural and spiritual site.
