Clervaux Castle. Clervaux, Luxembourg

Clervaux Castle, or Schlass Klierf, is a historic gem in Northern Luxembourg. Dating back to the 12th century. Perched at 365 meters on a rocky spur above Clervaux, the castle offers stunning views of the surrounding area. It was initially built by Gerard, Count of Sponheim, and expanded in the 15th century by the Lords of Brandenbourg. Claude of Lannoy added the grand Knights’ Hall in the 17th century.

Over time, the castle fell into disrepair until its near-destruction in 1944 during the Battle of Clervaux. After extensive restoration, it now features a museum of models of Luxembourg’s castles and a museum dedicated to the Battle of the Ardennes.

A highlight is the permanent exhibition of “The Family of Man” by Edward Steichen, comprising 503 original prints from his renowned collection. This exhibit, which has toured the world, now resides in Clervaux, paying homage to Steichen’s Luxembourgish roots.

Visitors can explore the castle’s fascinating history, beautiful architecture, and enriching exhibits. Though the castle’s interior is not always open to the public, its gardens and surrounding scenery offer a perfect setting for a leisurely visit.
