Bird observatory ‘Tij’. Haringvliet, Netherlands
On the outskirts of Haringvliet stands a unique birdwatching observatory. Built in the shape of a giant egg, it rises 8 meters high and immediately catches the eye.
The observatory was opened in 2019 by the Dutch Society for the Protection of Birds together with the nature conservation organization Natuurmonumenten. Their goal was to create a place where visitors can observe birds in their natural habitat without disturbing them.
Inside, a powerful Swarovski Optik telescope is installed, creating the feeling of being right in the middle of the birds’ world.
The path leading to the observatory runs along wooden boardwalks, while reeds and animal tracks enhance the atmosphere of a protected nature reserve.
Tij’s unusual architecture attracts not only birdwatchers, but also photographers. It’s a place where you can truly experience silence and a close connection to nature.
In autumn or winter, it’s recommended to wear waterproof boots, as the trail beyond the dam can sometimes be flooded.
The observatory is open year-round from sunrise to sunset.
