Bastogne Barracks stand as a legendary landmark of the Second World War. Built in the mid-1930s for the Belgian Army, this military site gained worldwide recognition during the Battle of the Bulge in December 1944. Today, it serves as an interpretation centre dedicated to WWII, offering visitors an immersive insight into one of the key chapters of the liberation of Europe.

The barracks hold a profound historical significance. When German forces surrounded the town and demanded its surrender, the American commander Brigadier General Anthony McAuliffe famously formulated his brief, one-word reply: “NUTS!” This legendary response boosted the morale of the allied troops, who successfully held out until the arrival of the first Sherman tank, Cobra King. In 2010, the former military quarters officially became a museum to preserve this immense heritage.

The museum’s exhibition route takes visitors through a series of impressive permanent and fully renovated galleries dedicated to military history. In the “Mechanised Warfare” gallery, visitors can explore the technological developments of the conflict from 1940 to 1945. The “Battle of the Bulge” gallery showcases 13 American and German vehicles and artillery pieces, and features a documentary film as well as a virtual reality 3D experience inside a Sherman tank. Visitors can also discover the “Field Artillery Tractors” gallery, which displays historic vehicles such as the M4 High Speed Tractor, the rare Mack NO truck, and powerful howitzers.

This museum is an exceptionally welcoming place for families visiting with children. Younger guests aged 4 to 9 can discover the collection through engaging games, anecdotes, and even get a special poster to assemble their own model tank. Teenagers aged 10 and up can enjoy the interactive “On the tracks” tour, which invites them to actively engage with history.
